These classic French tablecloths take their name, “Bastide” from a style of town found in the south-west of France.
Bastides were founded in the 13th and 14th century. They were known as “new towns” as the whole town was created at once. They were thought to be inspired by the Roman “castrum”, with a central square lined with sheltered arcades and often, a covered market place. A church was usually built adjacent to the main square. This commercial hub was surrounded by a grid of streets.
Contrary to popular belief, early bastides were not fortified. It wasn’t until the Hundred Years War between England and France ravaged the area that walls were built to protect the towns. There are around 700 Bastides remaining in France.
With it’s lovely border and evenly spaced patterns, these tablecloths are a worthy reminder of these medieval towns.
