These classic French tablecloths take their name, “Bastide” from a style of town found in the south-west of France.

Bastides were founded in the 13^th and 14^th century. They were known as “new towns” as the whole town was created at once.  They were thought to be inspired by the Roman “castrum”, with a central square lined with sheltered arcades and often, a covered market place.  A church was usually built adjacent to the main square.  This commercial hub was surrounded by a grid of streets.

Contrary to popular belief, early bastides were not fortified.  It wasn’t until the Hundred Years War between England and France ravaged the area that walls were built to protect the towns. There are around 700 Bastides remaining in France.

With it’s lovely border and evenly spaced patterns, these tablecloths are a worthy reminder of these medieval towns.

180cm. Choose between 100% cotton or the same 100% cotton tablecloth with an acrylic Teflon coating.

100% Cotton:

Normal machine wash in cold or warm water. Washes beautifully. Your tablecloth doesn’t shrink and is fade resistant. So easy to care for.

100% Cotton Teflon Coated:

What a fabulous invention!? Easy care. Simply wipe down with a wet cloth after each use. The cotton fabric is treated with an acrylic Teflon coating therefore the tablecloth is stain repellent. It’s like magic because any spills simply bead on the cloth ready to be wiped off. Perfect for high traffic areas such as the kitchen or outdoors.

The great thing about the coating is that although there’s a light sheen, because the tablecloth is made of cotton (and not plastic or oilcloth), it drapes nicely at the corners and doesn’t stick out at awkward angles. This water-repellent cotton can be washed in the washing machine although it doesn’t need washing nearly as often as a standard cotton tablecloth. A bonus for the environment and it saves you time and money. Ideal for everyday use.
