X-Rated Aix-En-Provence

Nestled in the heart of charming Aix-en-Provence in the south of France lies an X-Rated reminder of the preferred hobby of gentleman with time and money to spend. Legend has it that Aix’s prostitutes made their home on the Rue Espariat.

In 1745, Georges Vallon Jean-Baptiste d’Albertas bought a private house on Rue Espariat. He wanted to showcase his wealth through dramatic architecture and style.

What he didn’t realize was that he had moved next door to an ancient brothel. The second-story balconies featured most unusual metal-work. They were a way of announcing the house to potential customers. The balconies clearly feature .. umm .. (there’s no delicate way to put this) .. the male private parts ..

Albertas embarked on a grand plan.  He acquired the building next door. Then, he bought the entire street facing his home. In order to best show off his new mansion, Albertas knocked down the block of buildings on the other side of the road.  In keeping with the modern Parisian architecture of the time, he created a “place” with a fountain. The result was to showcase his own, architecturally stylish home.

Oddly, Albertas decided he would build the new buildings around the place in the pre-existing design of the street. Brothel-style.  And so it is that the Place d’Albertas, one of the most beautiful spaces in Aix, features metal-work penises across the entire facade.

Today, the buildings surrounding the Place d’Albertas are rented as individual apartments. If you’ve ever wanted a residence with a most unusual balcony, this is the place for you.
